Freddy Hooper camp–
–at the former site of Wilbur Nelson’s Cabin Camps
Freddy had the camp positioned nearest the creek. He had visited the area and fell in love with it. Initially purchased with 2 partners, who did not stay involved. He obtained a 25 year lease with park takeover because he and others in the area had a valid 99 lease from Madge Nelson for their sites.
The camp was positioned to the the left alongside the road and just beyond the dock–where Dr. Kendall’s houseboat was often docked.
Freddy (William F. Hooper) was an accountant at Cherry Point. This camp had been Wnkie Roberts house previously.
The camp was “finished off inside”–he used it for hunting and fishing–his wife (Judy) loved it there and the family used the camp often.
Their son–Bill Hooper–a minister at Mill Creek–told Clay Fulcher–“Clay–you know–when I dream, I dream about the banks, about the camps”
He had a sublease from the Willis family lease obtained from Madge Nelson (Wilbur Nelson’s sister)–who had inherited the lands that Wilbur owned and used for his fishing and hunting camps. Remains of those structures were up the road near the middle of the island.
Wibs (also known as “Webbs” was like a little community–families gathered to make ice cream, socialized–a community connection.
Freddy also shared a camp with Fred Cox further north on/near Swash Inlet.
While awaiting resolution of the 25 year lease, an interim “Special Use” agreement allowed continued use.
