Title
Fred Cox, of Atlantic (formerly of Grifton, NC) was the 1963 designer of the Cox pop-up /tent-top camper and the founder of Cox Trailers. He died Dec. 5, 2001.
Clay Fulcher remembered Fred as having a camp at or near “the Swash” and built around 1967. Clay related that the land used was not owned–functionally, a “squatter”.
Clay Fulcher related–
Charles Clifton Edwards, Jr. and Fred Cox built the camp at the Swash on property they did not own. The Swash cuts thru frequently today. Their camp was on higher area–up on the dunes.
Fred Cox helped him build the camp and provided materials from the Cox Trailers business–2 ft by 4 ft pieces of wood especially–built after ’67–even early 70s.
Charles Clifton Edwards was Clay’s father’s age.
“These weren’t just hunting camps to these people–they loved these places” –Clay related. They set nets, oystered, hunted–the family came over in “good seasons”.
Since they didn’t have a deed, when they got the NPS letter, they didn’t put in a claim to try to keep the camp.

NPS Structure Status Report–12/80–indicates that the NPS burned the camp 03/09/78.
