Earl and Richard Hamilton Camp–Evergreen Slough
Built in the late 1960s on land (thought by Clifton and Katy Hamilton Noe) without ownership. A nicely finished camp used for hunting and summer family vacations until it was destroyed by arson by another camp-owner who had lost his camp by Park service burning strategy.
The square shaped structure large enough to hold bunk beds and beds to one side and a kitchen along another wall and a large plywood dining table and a sitting area. A bathroom enclosure with shower was separated from the rest of the room and bedroom areas had some separation–not clearly recalled. A cistern filled by gutter capture of water supplied the cabin. Propane tanks supplied the ice box and stove. Gas lamps lit the camp. Screens sprayed with kerosene mostly kept insects out. Mr. Salter always kept a bottle of peppers in vinegar on the table.
The camp was positioned near the shore and had a dock in front. They fished, put out nets, walked the beach–they “stayed in the water”. Before recreation, the camp was cleaned and yard-work done –then the fun began. Hunting during season was a frequent use. Eight or nine of the family would be housed for vacation escapes. Katy remembers it was often “hot” over there and she sometimes slept on top of the table to “get a little air’.
Richard was a commercial fisherman initially and later supervised the Cedar Island ferry. Katy remembers that the new red and white speedboat made trips over much more brisk–the boat filled with supplies. Anything else needed was obtained from the shoreside store on Silver Lake at Ocracoke.
“Peaceful” was a key word used to describe the experience.
