——————————————————–
Dr Laurie Moore’s camp was the most frequent site of Jim Rumsfeld’s visits to Shackleford as a teen.
Jim was at the camp with Judith Spitzbergen at times, with the Marine Science Program, and she later taught him at West Carteret High School–Judith offered overnight retreats on Shackleford to West Carteret High School students , Jim included.
Dr Moore’s cabin had a small covered porch and (by JIm’s guess) was 20 by 25 feet–main sitting area to right and kitchen behind with a hand pump (and glass bottle of water to prime the pump) and to the left of the door were two compartments–at least one with bunk beds
Jim does not remember any outhouse or out buildings–details have faded with the year–“the roof was a low frame type.”

Judith–taught with the Regional Marine Science Project of Carteret County and later then served as curator for the Hampton Mariners Museum–responsible for education of visitors.
She was influential in the establishment of the NC Maritime Museum and served as Executive Director of the Beaufort Historical Assn.

Judy is seen here teaching along the Shackleford Banks shore.

In the camp’s latter years, it appears a little run-down.
