Station #189

Land for the C. G. Station was taken from the owners ($30 tendered), but provision was made for property to revert back to private ownership if property was abandoned.  Charles A. Mason and Louisa in 1894 surrendered their property in this action. The station was abandoned in 1965 and sat vacant-

Early memories by locals of the C.G. Station were of its doors knocked in by the weather and the first-floor floors filled with sand.  Going to the second floor found 10-15 metal bunks (they had taken the mattresses) and access to a cupola/ observation site.

In 60s, instead of going to the beach, often young and “young at heart” would gather at the station to swim, sun bathe , enjoy the social group.

“–abandoned in 1965, the station remained a gathering place for youth and those who felt young–sunbathing, swimming, boiling shrimp in a bucket–cigarettes and alcohol but no extremes (since family and neighbors were in the group)–gathering there avoided beach crowds, marines, etc. and gave more freedom”

“Lionel Mason, the grandson of one of the heirs, obtained or had 1/15th interest in the C.G. Station.  He put up a sign on the dock saying “Private Property–Keep Off”– which “pissed off” an individual who burned the station down.”

A current banks camp exists at the site of the CG Station, erected by one of the several property owners who received the reverted ownership after the station was abandoned.  The present legal owner is the federal government but the occupier has a life estate for the 3 acre site.
