Un-settled Connections

The Brant Rock Gun Club is documented in NPS publications as beginning use of the Portsmouth L.S.S. in 1956.  Names of individuals have not yet been found associated with this entity.

Since Holt and Eubanks reportedly bougth the station in 1956 (according to Bruce Weber’s interview), it is reasonable to suspect this  event represents this group.  However, interviews with Jack Gardner and Clifton Noe have indicated a group of men using the station—but Eubanks and Holt are not mentioned.  Robert Miller was offered the active lease on the station by “Sis Vellines” in 1977 upon Charlie’s death.  It has been said that Charlie’s lease was for $1 per year.  Sale to Willie York et al. of Raleigh is documented, as well as, purchase of the station or attached property by Sam Jones and Berkley Machine  Works and Foundry near the time of NPS acquisition.

1892 saw construction of a sister station at Brant Rock, MA.— also designed by Geaorge Tolman in the Quonochontaug style.  The name may have been a “nod” to this historical connection.

It is hoped that more information will come forward to clarify the connections.

BRANT ROCK GUN CLUB

In 1945, the Coast Guard closed the Portsmouth station permanently and, in March 1946, formally conveyed the property to the War Assets Administration. In the early 1950s, the Brant Rock Rod and Gun Club acquired the old station for a private club house. They were responsible for creating a landing strip that obliterated what little remained of the old Marine Hospital. The old life- saving station was occupied on a seasonal basis until it was incorporated into the Cape Lookout National Seashore in 1977. (NPS files)
